Many pregnant mothers rely on basic feature phones, which restricts access to smartphone-based maternal health applications. This project developed MaamaCare, an AI-powered SMS maternal health support system designed to improve communication between healthcare providers and pregnant mothers while delivering timely maternal health education and antenatal care reminders. The system integrates an automated SMS communication engine, an AI-powered maternal health assistant, and a web-based hospital monitoring dashboard. It was developed using an Agile iterative development methodology, enabling incremental development and testing of system components. Technologies used in the implementation include FastAPI for backend services, Supabase for database management, OpenAI API for the AI assistant, and Africa’s Talking SMS gateway for message delivery. Testing of the developed prototype confirmed that the system successfully sends automated SMS health messages, allows interaction with the AI assistant through the mother dashboard, and enables healthcare workers to monitor maternal communication through the hospital dashboard. However, the system was evaluated in a controlled development environment and has not yet been deployed in a real hospital setting. The results demonstrate that combining SMS communication with artificial intelligence can improve access to maternal health information in low-resource environments.
