Item THE IMPACT OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES ON WASTE REDUCTION IN GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS A CASE STUDY WITH UGANDA INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (UIRI)(UCU, 2024-10-14) ANYOKORIT GRACIOUSABSTRACT The study examined the impact of circular economy principles on waste reduction in government institution, with a specific focus on Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) as a case study. The study aimed to address the global challenge of escalating waste production and insufficient disposal methods. The research objectives included analyzing the fundamental circular economy principles, challenges associated with their implementation and the correlation between circular economy principles and waste reduction. The ultimate goal was to provide insights for policy development, enhance organizational waste management practices and stimulate further scholarly inquiry. The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative techniques. Purposive sampling strategy was utilized to select 44 participants from a population of 50 with focus on individuals possessing relevant expertise. Data collection involved primary sources such as interviews, questionnaires and observations, supplemented by secondary sources. The research adhered to stringent procedures to ensure precision and prioritized research objectives to effectively navigate challenges such as time constraints and information silos. The analysis revealed a predominantly male participant group with diverse educational backgrounds, age distribution and lengths of service at UIRI. There was substantial support for circular economy principles like waste elimination and revitalization of natural systems. However, challenges encompassed high initial investment requirements, technical issues and cultural resistance. Survey results indicated varying perspectives on the impact of these principles on waste reduction, with strong support for waste diversion and emissions reduction and mixed viewpoints on recycling rates and overall effectiveness. The discussion of findings encompassed widespread consensus on key circular economy principles while underscoring significant barriers to their implementation. Despite acknowledging the benefits, practical implementation encountered noteworthy obstacles. Recommendations included enhancing educational programs, fostering industry collaborations, improving legislative frameworks, and developing technical infrastructure to bolster effective circular economy practice
