Abstract

This report presents the design, simulation, and evaluation of an affordable, sensor-driven assistive system intended to support the care of non-verbal, immobile children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) in Uganda. The system integrates low-cost heart rate, sound, and motion sensors with an Arduino microcontroller to monitor physiological and environmental signals and provide timely alerts to caregivers. The study also examines existing caregiver practices and challenges to inform system design. Both a simulated model and a physical prototype were developed and assessed for feasibility, usability, and potential impact in institutional care settings. Ethical considerations were incorporated throughout the study, alongside a defined project timeline, budget, and expected outcomes. The implementation and evaluation were conducted at Mukisa Foundation in Kampala, providing practical insights into the system’s effectiveness in real- world caregiving environments.
