Item AN ASSESMENT OF THE IMPACT OF COVID 19 ON FUEL PRICES AND THE SALES PERFORMANCE OF PETROL STATIONS IN UGANDA(Uganda Christian University, 2024-10-17) Nangendo Tracy JeanThis research is about “An Assessment of The Impact of Covid 19 On Fuel Prices and The Sales Performance of Petrol Stations in Uganda”, with a specific focus on the central region of Uganda. The study aims to investigate the economic and social effects of Covid 19 on local residents, as well as the Fuel Prices and The Sales Performance of Petrol Stations. Chapter 1 includes the background of study, problem statement, objectives of the study; To identify the effects of COVID19 on Uganda, to assess the effect of COVID-19 on fuel prices and to examine the relationship between fuel prices and sales performance, research questions, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope of the study and the conceptual framework. Chapter two is about the theoretical review from other authors entailing the endogenous growth theory and reviewing all specific objectives. Chapter three is about the methodology deployed that is the research design, area of study, the study population, sample size and technique and the instruments of data collection. Whereas chapter four and five is about the analysis of data, presentations of data, the discussions and recommendations. Using a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods, this research reveals that COVID 19 had both positive and negative impacts on local communities. While some benefits, such as incorporating new technologies e.g. working online and infrastructure development, have been realized, concerns around fuel prices, laying off workers, and inadequate compensation remain. The study concludes by providing valuable insights into the impact of COVID-19 on the fuel industry in Uganda, specifically on fuel prices and petrol stations' sales performance. The findings will help petrol stations and policymakers develop strategies to mitigate the impact of future pandemics on the fuel industry.Item AN ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECT OF THE LOCATION OF RETAIL FUEL STATIONS ON SALES PERFORMANCE(Uganda Christian University, 2024-10-17) Adwek, Timothy, OcepaBackground: This study examined the effect of retail fuel station location on sales performance along Juba Road, Lira City, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The objectives were to assess the factors influencing sales performance, identify the factors affecting fuel station location, and determine the relationship between station location and sales performance in the area. Methodology: A case study design and explanatory research approach were applied. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews with 90 respondents, including station owners, managers, and sales staff. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used to analyze the relationships between location factors and fuel sales performance. Results: The findings revealed that proximity to major roads and high consumer traffic were significantly linked to improved sales performance (P-values = 0.0279 and 0.048, respectively). In contrast, land availability and competitor proximity were not significant factors. Additionally, customer service, fuel pricing, and convenience, were key drivers of fuel sales performance. Conclusion: The study highlights the critical role of strategic location, effective customer service, and competitive pricing in fuel station success. It recommends that operators prioritize high-traffic locations and enhance service quality to boost sales performance in Lira City.Item An Assessment of the Effectiveness of Health and Safety Practices in the Oil and Gas Sector of Uganda a Case Study of Total Energies E&P Uganda(Uganda Christian University, 2024-05-03) Joy MbambuThis research intended to assess the effectiveness of the health and safety practices at Total E&P in Uganda following the problem to many companies all over the world where there have been many deaths, accidents and injury cases across the world as a result of unsafe working environments. The study applied a descriptive analytical research design which involves using both qualitative and quantitative approaches in Total E&P Uganda with 67 targeted respondents and primary data was obtained from the respondents by administering a questionnaire to respondents of selected sample and use of interview guide where the researcher interacted with the selected individual one on one. The quantitative data was presented inform of descriptive statistics of frequency and percentages for each of the variables used in the study and was analyzed using a data analytical tool known as Statistical Package for Social sciences(SPSS). The study identified the health and safety practices, level of compliance of health and safety standards and the challenges associated with the promotion of health and safety practices in Total E&P Uganda and results rated them about 68% based on the response of the employee. Conclusively, the study findings affirmed the effectiveness of health and safety practices in Total E&P in Uganda and recommendations were made for the future researchers to address some areas that this particular study did not address.Item An Assessment of the Impact of Oil and Gas Exploration on Tourism in Uganda a Case Study of Albertine Region(Uganda Christian University, 2024-05-02) Trevor Godfrey AkambamuThe study intended to investigate the effects of oil and gas exploration on tourism in the Albertine region of Uganda. The objectives of the study were to examine the threats and opportunities posed by the petroleum industry on Uganda’s tourism sector, to examine the hotspot areas for the better growth of the tourism sector in the region and to analyze the relevance of the industry on the tourism sector in Western Uganda. The Methodology that was used, in conducting the research was both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data was collected using a self-administered Questionnaires as well as review of available documents and records. Data was analyzed using SPSS software where conclusions were drawn from. The study revealed that the oil and gas exploration activities in the Albertine region have led to opportunities like improved road network, oil revenues in form of taxes that can be invested in the tourism sector, hotels for accommodation among others within the Albertine region. The study further identified that oil and gas exploration activities are associated with threats like oil spills, noisy activities that have chased away the animals from their comfort zones, unprotected open holes trapping wild animals. This study recommended that the oil and gas exploration companies should seriously put into consideration the impact of mitigation and development framework on their activities that have affected the tourism sector, all stakeholders to embark on expressive permission in form of sustainable employment, hands on skills, funded by these sectors for the better growth of the community members and Department of Petroleum Exploration, Production and Development (PEPD) to effectively perform its supervisory role of monitoring and controlling the activities of the petroleum exploration and production.Item An Assessment on the Impact of Oil and Gas Exploration Activities in the Albertine Graben(Uganda Christian University, 2024-04-19) Immaculate AtugonzaThis research is about “An assessment on the impact of Oil and Gas exploration activities in the Albertine Graben”. Chapter 1 includes the background of the study, problem statement, objectives of the study; to examine the oil and gas exploration activities in Buliisa district, to identify the negative effects of oil and gas exploration activities on the standard of living in Buliisa district and to evaluate the negative effects of surveying on the surrounding communities of Buliisa district, research questions, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope of the study and the conceptual framework. Chapter 2 is about the contextual background and reviewing of all the specific objectives. Chapter 3 is about the methodology employed that is the research design, area of study, the study population, sample size, the sample technique, methods and instruments of data collection, primary data, questionnaires and analyzing of data. A descriptive research design was adopted to realize the study objectives, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches and a questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. The research findings revealed that Oil and Gas exploration activities have greatly had a negative impact on the standard of living of the people in Buliisa district and the surrounding communities. Some people in Buliisa district have regretted the existence of oil and gas in their area because they perceive it as a curse. Recommendations in the report include; the government must educate people on how to appreciate the natural resource as a blessing through sensitization, monitoring and engagement of the local people. The government should exercise transparency in property or land valuation when compensating the affected persons, enhance and implement mitigation measures to save the main forms of livelihoods and ensure simplicity in relevant legislations are simple and available in local languages. In addition the research would help the concerned bodies like Uganda Land Alliance, Petroleum Authority of Uganda and National Environmental Management Authority in addressing Oil and Gas exploration issues earlier before their occurrence.Item Assessing Post COVID-19 Competition and Profitability in the Ugandan Downstream Oil Sector a Case Study of Stabex Petrol Stations in Kampala District(Uganda Christian University, 2024-04-19) Feta Benon ObayaThe purpose of this study was to assess the post Covid19 pandemic competition and profitability of Uganda’s downstream oil sector with a case study of Stabex International Ltd in Kampala district. The study was guided by three objectives which were; to analyze the current competitive landscape of the downstream oil sector in Uganda, to evaluate the impact of competition on profitability margins for companies within this sector and to identify the key drivers of competition and their effects on operational efficiency and market share distribution among downstream oil companies in Uganda. The study assessed a population of 35 from which a sample of 32 respondents were gotten. The cross-sectional design was used because cross-sectional studies are generally quick, easy, and cheap to conduct because limited time is spent in the field. With the cross-sectional design, the researcher was able to collect appropriate data quickly and cheaply. Closed ended questionnaires were utilized to collect data and analyzed using SPSS in form of percentages. The findings showed that a large majority agreed that there was a rise in the competition levels after restrictions due to the pandemic were scrapped allowing free operation of businesses. The findings showed that there increasing entry of new firms in the sector which opened roon for huge competition with reduced profits. The findings also showed that the market share was in equivalently divided the major dominants like TOTALEnergies and VIVO Energy taking the biggest market share leaving multiple players to compete in the smaller niches in the market. . The study recommends Stabex International Ltd and other petrol retailers should consistently provide high service levels to keep loyal customers and also ensure that monthly customer satisfaction surveys are conducted and the government should consider reducing on the petrol retailing taxes to keep them operative and reduce on their closure due to the high operational costs. Like any other research, this research is not exhaustive and therefore, further research is needed to research whether the results hold for other fuel stations in other Cities and districts. Other fuel stations might have similarities and therefore this research could also be applied in those fuel stations.Item Assessing the Impact of Exploration on People’s Livelihoods(Uganda Christian University, 2024-05-08) Shanita AsiimweThe examined the impact of exploration on people’s livelihoods in Butiaba Sub County. With a growing focus on natural resource extraction in the region, understanding the implications of exploration activities on local communities' livelihoods is imperative for sustainable development. This was guided by the following objectives; - to find out the main exploration activities taking place and to establish the impact of oil and gas exploration activities on people’s livelihoods in Butiaba Sub County, Uganda. The Oil and Gas industry everywhere faces problems and challenges. However, in the developing countries, these difficulties and challenges are present alongside a general situation of socio-economic stress, chronic resource shortages, institutional weaknesses and a general inability to deal with the key issues. The study adopted an economic theory by Adam Smith (1776) the theory states that wealth is created via labor, and self-interest spurs people to use their resources to earn money. This was relevant since it is an influential figure of the Industrial Revolution in Uganda. Oil and gas exploration activities are an indication to the revolution of the sector. The Oil and Gas industry everywhere faces problems and challenges. However, in the developing countries, these difficulties and challenges are present alongside a general situation of socio-economic stress, chronic resource shortages, institutional weaknesses and a general inability to deal with the key issues. The researcher adopted a descriptive research design. This is done to identify and obtain information on the characteristics of a particular issue (Kothari, 2008). The sample involved 33 respondents and determined by Slovene’s formula. Findings indicate that the males were the most at 23(69.7%) with the females being the least at 10(30.3%). Results also indicates that government has conducted surveying of the land with mean 3.36 std.54 surveying is one of the oil and gas exploration activity taking place in Butiaba Sub country, 3.39 mean indicates that there is site clearance including the surrounding areas of communities in Butiaba sub county and it is what guided for the establishment of the oil and gas plant. The study also found out that livelihood sources were engaged in before and after commissioning of oil and gas exploration activities. Mean 3.48 indicated that people access to safe water for domestic use in the community. In summary, the exploration activities undertaken in Butiaba sub county have provided helpful insights into the region's geological composition and potential resource reserves. This entails strengthening oversight mechanisms to enforce compliance with environmental regulations and best practices, including rigorous environmental impact assessments (EIAs) throughout the exploration process.Item Assessing the Lpg Uptake in Kampala: A Case Study of Makindye Division(Uganda Christian University, 2024-05-02) Emmanuel KaliisaThe study conducted a survey on LPG consumption in Kampala district using Makindye division as a case study. The study was guided by the following study objectives: To establish the factors contributing to the use of LPG among households in Kampala district Makindye division, to identify the challenges associated with the use of LPG among households in Kampala district Makindye division and to find out the sustainability of LPG use among households in Kampala district-Makindye division. Using a cross sectional research design; a sample size of = 155 respondents was obtained and used in the study by simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Data was analyzed using SPSS software version 18.0. The study revealed that the prices and availability of LPG cylinders to be more affordable by the community increases the demand for gas, LPG consumption were influenced by various factors, such as economic factors, household characteristics and demographic characteristics as well as other factors for increased demand of LPG, LPG consumption leads to a serious threat to leakage and human health and a lot of pollutants from household LPG consumption are harmful to human health. The study concluded that there remain some challenges in the field of LPG consumption, and it is worthwhile devoting much effort, although the number of scientific research is relatively large while the quality is relatively low. Therefore, it is suggested that, while developing the research field of LPG consumption of households, the quality of research results should also be improved, and high-quality papers should be published, and high-quality scientific research institutions should be established. The study recommends that the LPG market players should invest heavily in changing the mindset of the public towards accepting LPG as a cleaner, safer and environmentally friendly form of cooking over the other energy sources and the study also recommended that there is need for promotion of the use of efficient energy appliances.Item Effect of Oil and Gas Exploration on Land Ownership in Uganda: A Case Study of Buliisa District(Uganda Christian University, 2024-10-17) Godwin KuleUganda's recent discovery of oil reserves in the western region has sparked both excitement and concerns. By examining the effects of oil and gas exploration activities on the land ownership, we aim to shed light on the complex realities unfolding in Buliisa and contribute to informed decision-making about the future of oil development in Uganda.Item Socio-Economic Effects of Oil Exploration in Uganda: A Case Study of Buliisa District Western Uganda(Uganda Christian University, 2024-04-19) Enosi NyakairuThis study investigates the socio-economic effects of oil exploration in Buliisa District, Western Uganda. Employing a cross-sectional survey design with both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the research explores the impact of oil exploration on infrastructure development and employment opportunities within the district. The study population comprised municipality administrators, oil companies’ officials, area residents, local councils, and politicians. Using a sample size of 234 respondents, including area residents, local councils, oil company officials, municipality administrators, and politicians, data was collected and analyzed to draw meaningful insights. Results indicate a strong positive relationship between environmental effects and oil exploitation staff, suggesting an increase in staff involvement with rising environmental effects. However, a very weak positive correlation is observed between infrastructural development and oil exploitation, indicating limited impact of infrastructure on the success of oil projects. The findings also reveal a significant positive correlation between employment opportunities and oil exploitation, implying that increased opportunities in the industry enhance employment likelihood. Based on the conclusions drawn, practical recommendations are proposed. These include prioritizing environmental management practices to mitigate negative impacts, diversifying economic investments to reduce dependency on the oil sector, and implementing inclusive employment policies to ensure equitable access to job opportunities. These findings offer valuable insights for stakeholders aiming to enhance the socio-economic impact of oil exploration on Buliisa District and underscore the need for holistic strategies to maximize benefits while mitigating potential risks.Item The Impact of Enviromentmental Conservation on Oil and Gas Production in South Sudan. A Case Study of Paloch Oil Field in Melut County(Uganda Christian University, 2024-05-17) Peter AgothThe purpose of the study was to examine the impact of environmental conservation on oil and gas production in South Sudan with a case study of Paloch Oil Field, Melut County. The study was guided by three objectives which were; to identify the ways in which an environment can be conserved, to find-out the impact of environmental conservation on oil and gas production in South Sudan and to establish the challenges in maintaining environmental conservation amongst stakeholders and oil companies. The study assessed a population of 34 from which a sample of 32 respondents were contacted and the targeted sample of respondents was reached and able to respond with a frequency of 22 males and 10 females hitting the targeted sample of 32 respondents. The main research instruments used for data collection was entirely self-administered questionnaires with close ended questions were utilized to collect data and analyzed using Statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) in form of distribution frequencies and percentages. The findings showed that majority of the respondents agreed to Reforestation programs near oil and gas production areas for conserving and mitigating environmental damage. Therefore, it has positive impacts on oil and gas production. This huge support came as a result of implementing stricter environmental regulations that help the stakeholders and oil and gas companies to combat the vice of environmental damage and biodiversity fortification. The researcher recommends the implementation of environmentally friendly practices like reforestation near oil and gas production areas as a way of conserving the environment. This can be achieved through implementing stricter regulations that make it mandatory for the production Companies to support such initiatives. Like any other research, this research is not exhaustive and therefore, further research is needed to research whether the results hold for other oil and gas production fields in the country. Other oil fields and government sectors might have similarities and therefore this research could also be applied in those production siteItem The Impact of Oil Exploration on the Social-Economic Welfare of People in Albertine Region. A Case of Hoima District(Uganda Christian University, 2024-10-18) William MwesigwaThis study investigated the impact of oil exploration on social economic welfare of people in Albertine region, Hoima district and it was aimed to (i) establish the impact of oil exploration on land acquisition, (ii) assess its impact on the health of residents, and (iii) determine its influence on infrastructural development in the Albertine region, Hoima district. The study employed a descriptive research design with both qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather data on perceptions and factual impacts. Surveys and interviews were conducted to collect primary data, supplemented by literature reviews and secondary sources. The sample comprised 97 respondents randomly selected from communities directly affected by oil exploration activities in Hoima district. Simple random and purposive sampling techniques were utilized to ensure representation across diverse socio-economic and geographic segments. The study found a mixed perception among respondents regarding the fairness of compensation for land acquired due to oil exploration. While transparency and community consultation were recognized in some cases, concerns over adequacy and inclusivity persisted. The study concludes that while oil exploration in the Albertine region, Hoima district, has brought economic opportunities and infrastructure development, it has also raised significant challenges. These include concerns over land acquisition practices, adverse health impacts linked to environmental pollution, and the need for sustainable infrastructural investments aligned with community needs. Thus the study recommended to enhance transparency and fairness in land acquisition processes through improved communication, inclusive consultations, and equitable compensation frameworks, the study further recommended to strengthen environmental monitoring and regulatory enforcement to mitigate health risks associated with oil exploration, focusing on air and water quality management and community health assessments, and finally to promote community-driven infrastructural projects that prioritize long-term sustainability and local development needs, ensuring equitable access and benefit-sharing among affected communities.
