| dc.description.abstract | The study was conducted to analyze the influence of child neglect on the academic performance of primary school students in Ogur Sub- County, Lira district, Northern Uganda. In this case, the main objectives of the study include; establishing the different types and frequency of child neglect that primary school learners face, determining the impacts of child neglect on the academic performance of primary school learners, and establishing the relationship between child neglect and academic performance among primary school learners in Ogur Sub- County, Lira District. This study was conducted using the cross-sectional research method. This is because this type of study design allowed the study to analyze the influence of child neglect on the academic performance of primary school learners by conducting interviews at a particular time. In addition, a combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches was employed in analyzing the issue under consideration. In collecting the necessary data for the study, questionnaires were utilized alongside interviewing techniques. The study findings established that child neglect is highly prevalent among primary school learners in Ogur Sub-county, Lira District, manifesting physically, emotionally, and educationally, and is primarily driven by poverty, parental irresponsibility, substance misuse, family breakdown, large family sizes, and low parental awareness of education; this neglect negatively affects school attendance, academic performance, motivation, concentration, social behavior, and future opportunities, and addressing it requires coordinated efforts from parents, teachers, schools, communities, and government. Lastly, the study recommended that addressing child neglect and improving academic performance in Ogur Sub- County requires parents to meet children’s basic needs and act responsibly, schools to provide counseling and academic support, communities and NGOs to offer targeted assistance and awareness, and the government to strengthen social protection and education programs. | |
