Abstract

The theory behind this research is the Attachment Theory in which the emotional relationship between a child and caregiver affects the development, behaviour and social outcomes of a child. The theory was initially developed by John Bowlby in 1969, which explains the influence of the emotional relationship between a child and caregiver in affecting the development, behaviour and social outcomes of a child. Attachment theory assumes that children need to receive the same level of emotional support, protection and nurturing at the hands of the caregivers so that they will develop secure attachments that will result in psychological stability and healthy development (Bowlby, 1988).
