Abstract

The integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in supply chain management (SCM) has emerged as a critical determinant of organizational success and competitiveness. This dissertation explores the impact of ICT on supply chain management efficiency at Uganda Christian University, Mukono. The specific objectives are to investigate the relationship between ICT and SCM, examine the challenges of implementing ICT in SCM, and propose strategies to overcome these challenges. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, encompassing both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. The findings reveal that the adoption of ICT tools, such as management information systems (MIS), cloud-based systems, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, has substantially improved SCM processes at the university. Real-time data accessibility and enhanced visibility facilitated by these tools have led to faster decision-making, reduced lead times, and increased overall process efficiency. Moreover, the integration of ICT tools has positively impacted product quality within the SCM framework, as evidenced by improved quality control and compliance monitoring. However, certain challenges in ICT adoption were identified, including initial investment costs, data security concerns, and the need for continuous staff training. Strategies to address these challenges were proposed, such as investing in robust ICT infrastructure, implementing data security measures, and providing regular training programs for supply chain personnel. The research further recommends exploring areas of future research, such as the integration of block chain technology in SCM, sustainable SCM with ICT, and the economic impact of ICT adoption. These areas of investigation are vital for maximizing the benefits of ICT tools in SCM and guiding the university's strategic decisions. In conclusion, the dissertation demonstrates that ICT adoption plays a pivotal role in enhancing supply chain management efficiency at Uganda Christian University Mukono. By strategically implementing and overcoming challenges, the university can harness the full potential of ICT tools to optimize SCM processes, improve product outcomes, and sustain a competitive advantage in the dynamic and evolving market landscape.
