dc.description.abstractThis research was undertaken to assess taxation and performance of selected small and medium scale in Bufujja-Kachonga Town Council, Butaleja District. The research study was conducted in respect to three specific objectives, that is to say; To determine the different taxes that are paid by SMEs in Bufujja-Kachonga Town Council, To examine the different ways of measuring performance at Bufujja-Kachonga Town Council, To assess the relationship between taxation and performance of Bufujja-Kachonga Town Council. Descriptive survey design with both qualitative and quantitative technique was used for the study. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques were collected. The target population was 45 SMEs in Bufujja-Kachonga Town Council. The study used Purposive sampling and Simple random techniques. The study used questionnaire, interviews and observation to collect data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlations, and narrative text. Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between taxation and financial performance. The study found that 43% of the respondents agreed that different taxes are paid by Small and medium enterprises in Bufujja-Kachonga Town Council like value added tax, local service tax, local hotel tax, capital gain tax and rental tax. The study found also that 52% of the respondents agreed that there are different ways of measuring performance for instance statement of financial position, statement of comprehensive income and statement of cash flow. The findings indicated that taxation affects performance of small and medium scale businesses negatively. The study revealed that 45% agreed that there is a significant negative relation between Taxation and financial performance. The study concluded that tax is a tool for fiscal policy employed by the government to influence the business negatively or positively depending on the nature of business activities in Bufujja-Kachonga Town council. This study recommends that taxpayers should have more Information about taxation not only taxes paid. There is need to conduct further study on taxation effects on financial performance on other sectors.
