dc.description.abstract | Early marriages have continued to be a serious global concern for governments to address particularly in developing countries where culture is a strong determinant of ways of lives of the people. Children marrying children is a common phenomenon now days. This study investigated the effect of parenting styles on early marriages in Budadiri Town Council, Sironko district and the study’s objectives were three folds: first, the study was aimed at finding out the effect of permissive parenting on early marriages in Budadiri Town Council, Sironko district. Secondly, the study assessed the effect of authoritative parenting on early marriages in Budadiri Town Council, Sironko district and thirdly, the study examined the effect of uninvolved parenting on early marriages in Budadiri Town Council, Sironko district. The study used cross-sectional study with the help of both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected from 80 respondents in Budadiri Town Council using a semi structured questionnaire and interview guide. Descriptive statistics (Mean, Mode and Standard deviation) was used to analyze quantitative data while qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Simple random and purposive sampling techniques were used to select study participants. The study found that parents are too tolerant and lenient to teenagers' actions and permissive parents are non-punitive of children’s behavior. It was also found that permissive parents impose limited rules on their children and parents are more inclined to grant their children’s freedom. The researcher also found that authoritarian parents give directives to children and offers parental warmth and understanding for children. Findings also show that authoritative parents dedicated to children’s needs and supervision of children promotes healthy adolescent development. Study 7 findings further show that uninvolved parents do not set firm boundaries for children is given a lot of freedom to make life choices. Additionally, findings revealed that uninvolved parents pay little attention to the children’s behaviors and children are left largely to fend for themselves without rules and uninvolved parents do not provide guidance to children. The study recommends that effective parental involvement in children affaires and consistently monitors their behaviors as well as setting firm boundaries and setting a conducive family environment for children to help prevent grounds for early marriages. | |
