| dc.description.abstract | This study examined the impact of substance abuse on depression among youths in Seeta, Mukono District, Uganda. Substance abuse among young people is a growing social and public health concern because of its potential effects on mental health, family relationships, education, and general well-being. The study was guided by three objectives: to determine the prevalence and patterns of substance abuse among youths in Seeta, to assess the level of depression among youths who abuse substances, and to identify protective factors and community-based strategies that can reduce the impact of substance abuse on depression. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A total of 80 respondents participated in the study. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, key informant interviews, and observation. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, while qualitative data were analysed thematically. The findings revealed that 91.3% of the respondents reported substance use, with alcohol being the most commonly reported substance (48.8%), followed by marijuana or cannabis (25%), cigarettes or tobacco (12.5%), khat (8.7%), and other drugs (5%). The findings further indicated that 93.8% of respondents were reported as experiencing depression, with common symptoms including persistent sadness, hopelessness, sleep problems, fatigue, poor concentration, and thoughts of self-harm. Regarding protective factors, 68.8% of respondents reported that family problems influenced their substance-use behaviour. The study also established that awareness of community-based intervention programmes was limited, with only 43.8% of respondents aware of such programmes and 37.5% participating in them. The study concludes that substance use and depressive symptoms are major concerns among the youths who participated in the study, while family difficulties and limited community support may increase their vulnerability. It recommends strengthening family counselling, youth sensitisation, community-based mental health services, substanceabuse prevention programmes, and access to professional counselling and referral services.
