Abstract

ABSTRACT The study was guided by the topic: Effect of parenting practices on the prevalence of juvenile delinquencies in Nalwanza sub-County, Bududa District, the study was guided by the following research objectives: To assess the factors contributing to prevalence of juvenile delinquencies in Nalwanza sub county of Bududa district, to find out the effect of parenting practices on the prevalence of juvenile delinquencies in Nalwanza sub county of Bududa district and lastly to examine measures of preventing juvenile delinquencies and strengthening parenting practices in Nalwanza Sub County of Bududa district. The study used a qualitative research design and it considered a sample size of 14 participants. The Study findings revealed that: there are a number of factors contributing to juvenile delinquencies and among the factors they mentioned was acculturation with destruction of the family and tribal system, that educational systems contribute to juvenile delinquencies because educational systems don‟t provide enough time to offer parenting of children which have increased on juvenile delinquencies, that tragic loss of family leaves children in shock and always lead to poor parenting leading to increase in juvenile delinquencies, that parenting practices have both negative and positive effects on prevalence of juvenile delinquencies, that parents are the most critical factor in children's social development. That juvenile delinquencies can be prevented through providing skills during development of children, that preventing juvenile delinquencies through enhancement of parental practices can help shape juveniles to follow what their parents want hence preventing crimes, that poor implementation due busy schedules by parents has led to failure of various interventions put in place to prevent juvenile delinquencies. The study recommended that: Government should develop policies that may strengthen the prevention of juvenile delinquencies in different societies/ communities, that parents and teachers should work in partnership in order to reduce on increasing juvenile delinquencies in different societies/ communities and finally that there is need for the Government to put in place sensitization programs that may help parents and their families prevent juvenile delinquencies.
