dc.description.abstractThis study examines the impact of resource-based conflicts on social cohesion among refugees and host communities in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Isingiro District, Uganda. The growing refugee population has increased competition for scarce resources such as land, water, firewood, employment opportunities, and social services, creating tensions that may affect peaceful coexistence between refugees and host communities. Using a case study design and a desk approach, the study investigates the causes of resource-based conflicts and their effects on trust, cooperation, and social relationships within the settlement. The study finds that unequal access to resources, environmental pressures, and perceived inequalities in aid distribution are key sources of conflict. However, collaborative resource management, community dialogue, and conflict resolution mechanisms can strengthen social cohesion. The findings provide insights for policymakers and development partners seeking to promote peaceful coexistence, sustainable resource management, and stronger social integration between refugees and host communities in refugee-hosting areas.
