| dc.description.abstract | This research investigated the impact of gender-based violence on women's involvement in political processes within local governance, specifically focusing on Mbarara Central Division in Mbarara District. The study aimed to assess how economic abuse affects women's political engagement in local governance, analyze the influence of emotional abuse on their participation, and evaluate the repercussions of physical abuse on their roles in governance. Employing a cross-sectional survey design, the research incorporated both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires and interviews, utilizing purposive as well as simple random sampling techniques. A total of 60 respondents from Mbarara Central Division participated in the study. Findings indicated that various forms of abuse—namely economic, emotional, and physical significantly hinder women's political participation in Mbarara Central Division. Economic abuse limits women's access to vital resources and diminishes their decision-making authority; emotional abuse negatively impacts their self-esteem and deters them from engaging in political affairs; while physical abuse fosters an atmosphere of fear and insecurity, further restricting their involvement in governance. Finally, the study proposed several recommendations: implementing extensive financial support programs alongside legal protections to combat economic abuse; establishing targeted emotional support services and counseling for women facing emotional distress; and enforcing stringent laws against physical abuse while creating strong support networks for survivors. | |
