dc.description.abstract | The study sought to examine the effect of entrepreneurial skills and financial performance of SMEs in Mbale City, Industrial Division in Uganda. The study specifically focused on addressing three objectives which included; to examine the effect of management skills on the financial performance of SMEs, to examine the effect of communication skills on the financial performance of SMEs and to examine the effect of technical financial management skills on the financial performance of SMEs in Mbale City Division. The study adopted a cross sectional survey design and data was collected from a sample of 45 SMEs in Industrial Division. Both purposive sampling and simple random sampling techniques were employed. Several methods were used to collect data both primary and secondary data and they included: the self-administered questionnaires; interviews; review of primary document and secondary literature. Data was analyzed using both descriptive statistics to describe the nature of sample and regression analysis was used to establish the relationships between study variables. The study found out that entrepreneur’s communication skills had a positive significant relationship with financial performance of SMEs (r=0.557). The study also found out that there was a positive significant relationship between entrepreneur’s management skills and financial performance of SMEs (r=0.689) and lastly it was also found out that entrepreneur’s technical financial management skills have a significant relationship with SMEs financial performance (r=0.765). The study therefore generated a number of conclusions that effect of management skills like following a specific business plan when implementing its activities. Effect of communication skills like mutual understanding with customers enhances cash-based transactions. Effect of technical financial management like most SMEs are well versed with accounting techniques for this study. The study therefore recommended that government must increase on educating the public masses on various management skills and increase on the funding in public universities thus creating more management course in various universities hence equipping the public with management skills. SMEs should embark on getting various models that may enhance communication skills for example having an employee who understands all the languages which will be another step in realizing more sales and revenue among SMEs. Increment on course under financial management in universities across the country with increase on the number of people with expertise in financial analysis this will help SMEs to get skilled personnel in the areas of financial management which will enhance their performance in Mbale Industrial City Division. | |
