Abstract
The study investigated the use of papyrus ash collected from Buziranjovu wetland in
Mukono as a partial replacement for fine aggregates in concrete. Various physical
and mechanical properties of concrete ingredients and papyrus ash were evaluated.
Concrete cubes were casted with different percentages of papyrus ash replacements
and tested at different curing ages. Results showed that increasing papyrus ash
replacement led to higher compressive strength and reduced porosity and
permeability. The optimum replacement was determined as 4%, meeting acceptable
ranges for all properties, with a compressive strength of 28 MPa meeting design
requirements. Further research should be conducted on how to improve the
workability, strength properties of this concrete and higher concrete class such that
these materials could be used broadly.
