Abstract

This research report was undertaken to examine the contribution of mass media in the fight against gender based violence in Bududa sub county, Bududa district. It was guided by three objectives; to assess the role of mass media in raising awareness about gender-based violence in Bududa sub county, to evaluate the effectiveness of mass media campaigns in changing attitudes towards gender-based violence within the community in Bududa sub county,to explore the potential of mass media platforms in empowering victims of gender-based violence to seek help and support in Bududa sub county. The researcher used a sample size of 63 respondents and used questionnaires and interview guide to collect data and later the data was analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Results of the first objective showed that mass media in raising awareness have a significant effect on gender-based violence in Bududa sub county. Supported by the following responses; 54% mass media has the potential to reach wide audiences and is instrumental in disseminating information; 62% were positive to the statement that mass media can mobilize communities to take action, challenge harmful stereotypes;61% of the respondents were positive to the statement that mass media promotes gender equality norms that reject violence against women and other marginalized groups. Results of the second objective revealed that mass media campaigns have a significant effect on gender-based violence within the community in Bududa Sub County. Supported by the following responses; 56% of the respondents were positive to the statement that mass media campaigns can effectively educate the public about the prevalence, consequences, and warning signs of gender-based violence, 80% of the respondents were positive to the statement that mass media campaigns play a crucial role in mobilizing communities to take action against gender-based violence. Results of the third objective showed that mass media plat form shave a significant effect on gender-based violence within the community in Bududa sub county. 68% had a positive response to the statement that mass media platforms have the potential to influence societal attitudes towards gender-based violence and challenge harmful norms and stereotypes. The government should incorporate a mix of media formats such as videos, social media posts, stories, and testimonials to keep the audience engaged and reach them through different channels.
