Abstract
The study examined the effects of stigma on the mental health of people living with HIV/AIDS in Teso Bar sub county, Lira district. The study was guided by labeling theory by Howard Becker (1963). a descriptive case study design with mixed methods was used. Data were collected from 40 PLHIV using questionnaires and 10 key informants including health workers, social workers and community leaders using interview guides. Findings revealed that PLHIV experienced social stigma (avoidance, gossip), self-stigma (fear of disclosure, shame) and family stigma. Stigma contributed to serious mental health challenges including stress 72.5%, loneliness 70%, depression 67.5% and low self-esteem 63.3%. coping mechanisms used included prayer/faith 77.5%, counselling 70%, family support 65% and support groups 57.5%. The study concludes that stigma negatively affects mental health of PLHIV in Teso Bar. Recommendations include strengthening community awareness programs, enforcing anti-discrimination policies and enhancing counselling and support group
services.
