| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound socio-economic impacts globally, with rural communities experiencing unique challenges. This study investigates the effect of COVID-19 on the socio-economic well-being of women in Akisim Parish, Soroti City. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research examines the pandemic's impact on women's income, health, education, and social structures. Findings indicate a significant loss of income due to disruptions in informal sector activities, an increase in unpaid care responsibilities, and heightened vulnerability to gender-based violence. Access to essential healthcare services was severely limited, exacerbating health risks for women, particularly in maternal and mental health. The pandemic also led to a disruption in girls' education, with long-term implications for gender equality in the community. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions to support women's economic recovery, improve healthcare access, and reinforce social support networks in rural areas like Akisim Parish. These measures are crucial to mitigating the long-term socio-economic effects of the pandemic on women and fostering resilience against future crises. Using a sample of 250 women, the research reveals that pandemic-induced employment changes, income fluctuations, and increased domestic responsibilities have significantly impaired mental health, with high levels of anxiety and depression reported. Financial instability was pronounced, with many women experiencing severe economic strain due to income loss and inadequate financial assistance. Additionally, the pandemic disrupted work-life balance, as heightened domestic duties combined with remote work created substantial stress. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to address these challenges, including enhanced financial support, mental health resources, and strategies to manage domestic workloads effectively. | |
