| dc.description.abstract | The study explored how gender inequality affected student academic performance at Uganda Christian University, Mukono through their actual experiences. The study was guided by three objectives: to examine the various forms of gender inequality experienced by university students, to identify the challenges faced by students due to gender inequality, and to explore strategies to address gender inequality for better academic performance. The research utilized three theoretical frameworks which included Feminist Social Work Theory, Ecological Systems Theory, and Intersectionality Theory as its foundation. The researchers conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with undergraduate students who were selected from different faculties. The researchers used thematic analysis to examine the collected data. The findings the study discovered that gender inequality exists through different methods which include classroom interaction patterns, authority power systems established between genders, and the execution of policies which face implementation challenges. Students reported challenges affecting academic engagement, psychological well-being, and career aspirations. The study concluded that gender inequality significantly influences students' academic experiences and performance at UCU. The study recommended three actions which included bettering policy enforcement and developing pedagogy that considers gender and creating better support systems for students who experience these issues. | |
