Abstract

This study analysed the determinants of mobile money adoption among Ugandan adults using data from the Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) 2023/24. The analytical sample included 3,704 adults aged 16 years and above. A survey-weighted logit model with average marginal effects was estimated to examine the influence of education, household wealth, mobile phone ownership, age, sex, rural residence, and sub-region. Mobile phone ownership emerged as the strongest predictor, raising the probability of adoption by 47.5 percentage points. Completing secondary education or higher increased adoption probability by 13.3 percentage points, while primary education increased it by 8.1 percentage points. Each step up the wealth quintile was associated with a 3.9 percentage point increase. Women were 10.8 percentage points less likely to adopt than men, with a larger gap in rural and poorer households. Rural residence was not statistically significant after controlling for other factors. The findings indicate that phone access, education, economic resources, and gender remain the key barriers to mobile money adoption in Uganda’s mature market. The study recommends policies targeting handset affordability, digital literacy, and gender-sensitive interventions to promote greater financial inclusion.
