Ngosticism and Percieved Influence on the Church in Corinth
(Uganda Christian University, 2024-09-02) Lawrence Nyeko
Gnosticism, a religious and philosophical movement in early Christianity, emphasized salvation through secret knowledge (gnosis) and the divine realm. Influenced by Platonism, Gnostics viewed the material world as evil and the immaterial realm as superior. Key components of Gnosticism include dualism, redemption through enlightenment, complex cosmology, and unique scriptural interpretations. Despite being deemed heretical by orthodox Christianity, Gnosticism persisted, influencing early Christian communities like those in Corinth. Scholarly interpretations highlight its syncretism with Greek, Jewish, and Eastern philosophies, adapting Christianity into a speculative system claiming superior knowledge. Paul's letters to the Corinthians address issues influenced by Gnostic beliefs, such as divisions, sexual immorality, and misuse of knowledge and freedom. He counters Gnostic elitism by asserting the true source of wisdom through the Spirit and advocating for moral integrity and communal responsibility.

A Call to Serve: Exploring Responses to Jesus’ Call in Matthew 4:18–20
(Uganda Christian University, 2024-08-28) Patrick Katuramu
In contemporary Christian society ministry, individuals from diverse professional backgrounds often feel a call to serve God. Many professionals, such as teachers, medics, engineers, and lawyers, have embraced ministry without proper guidance, leading to gaps in service delivery as they hastily leave their professions in response to their call. This speed to leave everything without proper guidance can result in challenges and gaps in service delivery within various sectors. Matthew 4:18-20 narrates the calling of Peter and Andrew, fishermen who left their nets to follow Jesus. This passage serves as a foundational text for understanding the concept of responding to Jesus' call. However, the circumstances of their call, their immediate response, and the factors that may hinder someone from leaving everything to follow Jesus remain subjects of inquiry. The study intends to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and significance of individuals responding to Jesus' call from various professional backgrounds. Through this exploration, the study hopes to contribute to a better understanding of how individuals can effectively respond to Jesus' call in their professional and personal lives, ultimately enriching Christian ministry and service delivery.

The Curse of Canaan in Genesis 9:18–27 and Its Effect on Ham’s Descendants
(Uganda Christian University, 2024-09-10) Amos Sukutha
The study is a about the curse of Canaan in Genesis 9:18-27 and its effects on the descendants of Ham. The study is a Biblical and research based and it is guided by three objectives; to investigate the historical and cultural context of the narrative of the curse of Canaan in Genesis 9:18-27. To analyze the theological implications of the curse of Canaan and lastly to assess the impact of interpretation and teachings related to the curse of Canaan in Genesis 9:18-27. The researcher used Hermeneutical Interpretation, Cultural Hermeneutical and Confessional Hermeneutical Methods to study and found out that the concept of curse of Canaan and the effects of curse on Ham`s descendants mentioned in the Bible especially in the book of Genesis has had a lasting impact on the interpretation and treatment of the descendants of Ham. The study also found out that this curse has been interpreted as a justification for the subjugation of people of African descent particularly during the era of slavery in the United States. It is argued that interpreting this curse narrative as a divine mandate for the enslavement or mistreatment of any group of people is a gross misinterpretation. The study recommends that studying the curse of Canaan is to consider the historical context in which it was written, understanding the socio-political dynamics of the ancient Near East. It also recommend the reading of texts for unraveling the nuances of the curse of Canaan, analyzing the language, syntax and literary devices, Delving into the original Hebrew text and comparing different translations, engaging with a diverse range of scholarly perspectives for a comprehensive study of the curse of Canaan and drawing an insights from the fields like anthropology, archaeology, theology and Biblical studies, including the consultation of reputable sources such as academic journals specializing in Biblical studies, commentaries on the book of Genesis and scholarly works on ancient Near Eastern history and culture.

The Study of 1 Corinthians 1:10–17: A Teaching on Unity Among Some Christians and Church Leaders of Amuria Archdeaconry
(Uganda Christian University, 2024-08-23) Daniel Okwero
This research is based on the study of 1 Corinthians 1:10-17: a teaching on Christian unity against divisions among some Christians and church leaders in Amuria archdeaconry (Diocese of Soroti). The study was carried out in the four parishes of; Amusus, Amuria, Asamuk, and Wera, under Amuria archdeaconry. The objectives of the study were to explore: first, the divisions in the Corinthian church and how Paul addresses them in 1 Corinthians 1:10-17; second, the divisions among some Christians and church leaders in Amuria archdeaconry, and thirdly, using Paul’s teaching about unity in 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 to address the problem of divisions among some Christians and church leaders in Amuria archdeaconry. To help gather information about divisions among Christians in Amuria archdeaconry, a purposive sample size of 40 respondents was used. These respondents included; clergy/priests, lay readers, other lay church leaders (heads of laity, mothers union chairpersons, youth leaders, mission and prayer leaders), and Christians of sound mind. The findings from the field indicate Christians and some church leaders cling to groups like; prayer and deliverance, revivalists, reawakens, and the trumpeters group. These divisions are caused by: desire to express spiritual gifts, need for money and fame, lack of sound biblical knowledge especially on the use of spiritual gifts. These divisions have led to many challenges like; continued rifts in the church, denial of some church leaders by Christians, limited time given to the message of the cross, continuous search for fame, and retarded development and exploitation of the naive Christians. Thus, teaching about unity using 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 is imperative

These respondents included; priests, civil servants, political leaders, traditional/cultural leaders, lay-readers, head of laities, mother’s union leaders, youth leaders and some people of sound mind in the community in arriving to this analyzed data. This has made many to lose faith and trust in marriages. This text of Genesis 2:18-25 therefore has helped to rediscover the purpose, nature and beauty that marriage had in the beginning and help the present generation to appreciate marriage once again as purposively ordained by God for the good of mankind.

It investigated into the historical, theological, and sociocultural contexts that shaped these perspectives. By examining the works of theologians, biblical scholars, and historians, the research aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of how marriage and divorce have been viewed and interpreted within the Christian tradition. This scholarly discussion highlighted the evolution of thought on these topics and how they aligned or diverged from the teachings found in Matthew 19:3-9. To Investigate Ways through which the Church Can Respond to Issues of Divorce that Arise in Families and Churches: The research focused on developing practical and pastoral strategies for the church to effectively address and manage divorce-related issues within its congregations and among its members. It considered current challenges faced by families and individuals experiencing divorce, and proposed ways the church could offer support, guidance, and healing. The Role of Christian Music in Preaching the Gospel in Goli Deanery (Colossians 3:16)
(Uganda Christian University, 2024-08-26) Elvis Kutesa
This research was carried out in Nebbi District with the aim of examining the role of Christian music in preaching the gospel in Goli Deanery, Nebbi Diocese (ND). It revealed that though modernization has affected the nature and practice of Christian music from preaching the truthful gospel as written in the scriptures to a secular orientation where by some musicians seek to promote their own messages that are not Christ, the good news is that harmonious melodies of Christian music still resonate within Goli Deanery, embracing the divine power of the gospel to reach the hearts of believers and proclaim the eternal message of faith, hope, and love on the ground of Goli Deanery, Nebbi Diocese. The researcher invested the nature and modality of Christian music used in worshipping God in Goli Deanery; the Church practice of using Christian music in preaching the gospel in Goli Deanery; the challenges faced by the Church in using Christian music to preach the gospel in Goli Deanery. Colossians 3:16 emphasizes the necessity of making music to the Lord: "let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through Psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your heart" NIV. The message of Christ. Refers especially to Christ's teaching, which in the time of the Colossians was transmitted orally. But by implication it includes the Old Testament as well as the New Testament. Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual songs. Some of the most important doctrines were expressed in Christian hymns preserved for us now only in Paul's letters. "Psalms" refers to the Old Testament Psalms, some of which may have been set to music by the Church. "Psalms" could also describe a song newly composed for Christian worship, where "hymn" is lit. "Psalm" in the Greek text. A "hymn" was a song of praise, especially used in a celebration, much like the Old Testament Psalms that praised God for all that He is. A "song" recounted the acts of God and praised him for them, much like the Old Testament Psalms that thanked God for all that he had done. See note on Eph 5:19. The investigation was based on this Biblical truth in order to preach the truthful gospel as written in the scriptures. Music brings us into the presence of God, assists us in hearing and responding to the word, helps us experience healing and provides us with the sense of being sent forth. Focusing on God as the source with our gifts of music gives us the ground to declare the truthful message of Jesus in music.

(Uganda Christian University, 2024-07-09) Amos Kodwo
This study explored the experiences of individuals from broken homes and the potential of faith based interventions in restoring hope and wellbeing. A survey was conducted among members of a church community, with 51 participants. The findings indicate that a majority of the respondents were male (62.7%) and young-to-middle aged (most frequent age group: 25-35 years). Church attendance was high, with 96.1% reporting attending church for over 5 years. Youths comprised the largest group within church positions (37.3%). The research suggests positive views on pastoral counseling for broken homes. Respondents showed the highest agreement (mean score of 4.29) with the statement that pastoral counseling is a key principle used by counselors. The data also highlights the challenges faced by individuals from broken homes, with the highest mean score (4.45) for agreement that living in a broken home negatively impacts mental health. Notably, while various coping mechanisms were reported, seeking counseling and support had a lower mean score (3.57) compared to self-care (3.96) and communication strategies (3.76). In conclusion, this study highlights the potential benefits of pastoral counseling in supporting individuals from broken homes. Further research with a larger sample and exploring reasons for not seeking counseling is recommended. Churches can consider tailoring programs to this population's needs. Future research areas include long-term effectiveness of pastoral counseling, influence of religious denomination, and exploration of available social and economic support systems.
